Abstract
This chapter provides an important foundation with an explanation of how lean concepts apply to the construction environment. It describes the work of researchers who sought to adapt Toyota’s approach to the construction environment. Lean construction has been defined in several ways as the concept continues to evolve. In fact, the term “Lean Construction” has come to signify both design and construction as these activities are closely interlinked. The Lean Construction Institute: Lean construction is a production management-based project delivery system emphasizing the reliable and speedy delivery of value. The Toyota Corporation has been highly successful in automotive manufacturing and is recognized as an outstanding example of a lean organization. With regard to Toyota’s recalls in 2009 and 2010, it must be noted that these problems were due to failures of management. Jeffrey Liker describes principles in the contemporary Toyota Way. The Toyota Way represents an important foundation for lean construction.
