Comparative Analysis of PV Simulation Software by Analytic Hierarchy Process

Abstract

This study employs the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology to evaluate and compare four prominent PV simulation software tools: PVsyst, HOMER, PVGIS, and SAM. With the urgent need to transition to renewable energy due to escalating global warming concerns, the evaluation of simulation software becomes pivotal. Each software tool is assessed based on criteria such as availability and cost, solar database access, input data requirements, output presentation, updateability, and limitations. A comprehensive AHP hierarchy is established and pair-wise comparisons are performed to assign relative priorities. The weights of each criterion are determined, leading to an overall rating for each software. The results reveal that SAM is the most suitable choice for Bangladesh due to its cost-effectiveness, extensive solar database, efficient input requirements, comprehensive output analysis, and adaptability. This research provides valuable insights for decision-makers in selecting an appropriate PV simulation software tool to promote renewable energy adoption and planning.
