Abstract

Solid-state welding processes have become the most integral development in the field of materials joining since its inception and have found widespread usage in many industries. In the past decade, a lot of work has been devoted to friction stir welding and similar processes. However, little attention has been devoted toward ultrasonic welding (USW) and its application to magnesium alloys. This paper will discuss and comment on the recent advances in the USW of Magnesium alloys. The state-of-the-art on this topic is summarized, including similar (Mg alloys to Mg alloys) and dissimilar (Mg alloys to other metals) joining, ultrasonic-assisted welding methods, and process modeling. Finally, some opportunities for further research are outlined.
