Abstract

• Mg-3Pb alloy evaluated as sacrificial anode for AZ31, AM60 and AZ91 alloys. • Cathodic protection efficiencies of 98% for AZ31, 97% for AM60, and 96% for AZ91. • No polarity reversal observed in any case. • No cathodic activation exhibited by Mg-3Pb after galvanic polarization. • Mg-3Pb provided cathodic protection to AZ31, AM60 and AZ91 alloys. The use of a custom Mg-3Pb alloy as a sacrificial anode for protecting AZ31, AM60, and AZ91 Mg alloys in 0.1 M NaCl solution was evaluated using surface characterization, mass loss, electrochemical measurements, and gravimetric H 2 collection. The Mg-3Pb alloy exhibited consistently lower open circuit potential values than the protected alloys and demonstrated protection efficiencies over 95 %. No polarity reversal or cathodic activation was observed, despite increased anomalous H 2 evolution. These findings confirm the effectiveness and viability of Mg-3Pb alloy as a sacrificial anode for the cathodic protection of AZ31, AM60, and AZ91 Mg alloys.
