Abstract
Key points Penetrating abdominal trauma management can be complex and requires concurrent resuscitation and urgent decision-making The <C> ABCDE initial approach to management is recommended (where <C> represents control of catastrophic haemorrhage) Unstable patients with evidence of active haemorrhage should be explored surgically before time-consuming investigations are undertaken Methods to control catastrophic haemorrhage in the abdomen are limited and so rapid transfer to the operating theatre is paramount Management requires consideration of multiple management options, including damage control surgery, definitive surgery or selective non-operative management
