The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS)
Jonathan Rigg
Abstract
The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) replaced the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2015, and lie at core of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The SDGs comprise 17 goals, underpinned by 169 targets. They are regarded by their advocates as global, holistic, interdependent, and inclusive. They are also viewed as representing a paradigm change from the MDGs. Critics, however, argue that the SDGs fail to address the structural conditions that shape and sustain many of the challenges facing the globe. They represent, therefore, a case of business as usual rather than a transformation in global development.
