Abstract

Depression has been affecting a considerable part of the population and represents one of the main causes of disability, resulting in an increase in the use of antidepressants. Associations between drugs can cause drug interactions (DI), with potential risk for the patient. The incidence of DI is believed to be 3 to 5% in patients who use less than 4 medications, reaching 20% among those who use 10 to 20 medications simultaneously. Thus, the objective of this article is: To identify potential drug interactions involving tricyclic antidepressants and to discuss the pharmacist's role in preventing and managing these interactions. The methodology adopted for the development of this study was the bibliographic research of a descriptive qualitative nature, based on studies already developed. To this end, materials were searched through online academic research platforms: Google Scholar, LILACS, Scielo, CAPES Periodicals and Pubmed, from 2013 to 2022 and the search strategies were based on combinations of keywords and Portuguese and English languages, and the Boolean operators AND and OR. It was found that among the antidepressants most involved in drug interactions, tricyclic antidepressants stand out. However, through pharmaceutical care, it is possible to prevent and detect adverse reactions related to drug interactions, alert prescribers and suggest possible changes in dosage or therapeutic regimen, helping to improve the efficacy and safety of pharmacotherapy.
