Nanoceria dissolution at acidic pH by breaking off the catalytic loop

Abstract
Experiments at low pH show that nanoceria – widely reported to have catalytic behavior – acts as a pure stoichiometric reagent where insoluble Ce 4+ ions transform into soluble Ce 3+ in the nanocrystal that finally dissolves.
