Abstract

Affluence in museums has gone through a substantial decrease worldwide over the years, recently also because of the COVID-19 pandemic social distancing policy. Many museums faced the issue proposing digital approaches, to make the collections more appealing and accessible; virtual, augmented and mixed reality (overall named XR) have shown to be a valuable support for this goal. In the current paper, we initially present a selection of success cases, then proceed proposing a set of guidelines for the exploitation of XR technologies in museums. Based on good practices coming from the user centered design of XR experiences, as well as museum project design and management, we propose an easy and standardized approach to the task.
