Abstract

We report on the interplay between a van Hove singularity and a charge density wave state in <a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><a:mrow><a:mn>2</a:mn><a:mi>H</a:mi></a:mrow><a:mtext>−</a:mtext><a:msub><a:mi>TaSe</a:mi><a:mn>2</a:mn></a:msub></a:math>. We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate changes in the Fermi surface of this material under surface doping with potassium. At high doping, we observe modifications which imply the disappearance of the <b:math xmlns:b="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><b:mrow><b:mo>(</b:mo><b:mn>3</b:mn><b:mo>×</b:mo><b:mn>3</b:mn><b:mo>)</b:mo></b:mrow></b:math> charge density wave and formation of a different correlated state. Using a tight-binding-based approach as well as an effective model, we explain our observations as a consequence of coupling between the single-particle Lifshitz transition during which the Fermi level passes a van Hove singularity and the charge density order. In this scenario, the high electronic density of states associated with the van Hove singularity induces a change in the periodicity of the charge density wave from the known <c:math xmlns:c="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><c:mrow><c:mo>(</c:mo><c:mn>3</c:mn><c:mo>×</c:mo><c:mn>3</c:mn><c:mo>)</c:mo></c:mrow></c:math> to a new <d:math xmlns:d="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><d:mrow><d:mo>(</d:mo><d:mn>2</d:mn><d:mo>×</d:mo><d:mn>2</d:mn><d:mo>)</d:mo></d:mrow></d:math> superlattice.
