Ethnobiological Classification
Brent Berlin
Abstract
In this chapter I consider the nature of man’s folk classification of plants and animals with the hope of sharing with the reader some notions that have been developed about the properties of non Western conceptual systems for describing the biological world. I suggest as well that some of the features of ethnobiological classification appear to be generally applicable for an understanding of other natural categories such as those discussed by Rosch (1973), Nelson (1974), and most recently, Anglin (1977).
