Abstract

The physical world is being turned into a digital world that connects everything. Humankind can now communicate at all times and places thanks to an explosion of intelligent devices and innovations. The Internet of Things is changing the way we have been living, playing and working. The industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), also known as Industry 4.0 or I4.0, is the fourth industrial revolution that emphasizes interconnectedness, automation, artificial intelligence, autonomy, the internet of things, machine learning, deep learning and real-time data. Over the coming next decade, it is estimated that around 40 billion devices may be linked in a similar way, less than half of today’s total. Manufacturing companies have numerous growth opportunities due to the continuous acquisition and transmission of information by machines. The Internet of Things and the tendency for improved communication mean that more data is collected in real-time from more sites, allowing for prompt reaction and increased sales, effectiveness, and performance. However, security and privacy are the most pressing concerns for the Industrial IoT. We will not realize the Industrial IoT’s full potential unless we can solve the several safety problems that plague it.
