Abstract
. This not only confirms prior work supporting that shear stress drives tribofilm growth, but demonstrates and quantifies how compressive stress inhibits growth, consistent with the rate-limiting step in tribofilm growth involving a bond-breaking reaction. Implications of these findings are discussed.
