Abstract
This research aims to develop natural dyes derived from annatto seeds (Bixa Orellana; Kesumba Keling). Because their active compound bixin is insoluble in water, it is saponified using NaOH to water-soluble norbixin. The solid–liquid extraction variables were extraction time & temperature, and NaOH concentration. The results showed that the highest norbixin (0.82 g/100 mL) was obtained by extraction at 60 °C for 5 h with 0.5 M NaOH. In the dyeing process, it showed good bonding power, color strength and resistance. It can be concluded that norbixin is a promising natural dye, especially if studied with the use of appropriate mordant.
