Capturing the perspectives of students with autism on their educational experiences: A systematic review
Jessica Zoe Zanuttini
Abstract
It is essential for researchers to use data collection methods that facilitate autistic students to share their views about their educational experiences, regardless of their preferred communication styles. This review investigates the methods used in existing research to capture the perspectives of autistic students about educational experiences such as bullying, transition, and wellbeing. The PRISMA guidelines informed the collection and analysis of the data presented in this review. Results indicate that semistructured interviews are the most commonly used method to elicit student perspectives; however, adjustments are often required to assist students with autism to express their opinions. Considerations for researchers conducting research with autistic students are presented, with an emphasis on how students can contribute to research development and design.
