Abstract

Digital twin technology has emerged as a transformative paradigm in various domains, offering real-time simulations of physical systems and assets. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) play a crucial role in enabling the creation and maintenance of accurate digital twins by providing essential data collection capabilities. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the integration of WSNs into digital twin technology, highlighting their significance, challenges, and future prospects. In this context, the chapter discusses the fundamental concepts of digital twins and their applications across industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, smart cities, and more. It emphasizes the critical role played by WSNs in bridging the physical-virtual gap by continuously monitoring and collecting data from physical entities. These data are then used to create and update digital replicas, allowing for real-time analysis, predictive maintenance and performance optimization.
