Abstract

Luminescent materials have enormous potential in many different areas. The conversion of biomass resources to functional luminescent materials has attracted significant attention. Due to their inherent luminescent properties, biomass materials can be efficiently converted into sustainable luminescent materials. However, to date only a few reviews have focused on this area of endeavor. Motivated by this lack of coverage, using this review we will address these shortcomings and introduce the types of biomass sources available for the preparation of luminescent materials. In the review, we will mainly focus on “structure-optical performance” correlation of biomass sources, preparation and optical properties of biomass-derived luminescent materials, potential applications of these luminescent materials, and discuss the future challenges and perspectives. This review will cover the most important recent developments in this area, and we anticipate that this will attract readers with diverse backgrounds and in addition encourage additional research groups to join this stimulating research area.
