Abstract
Central Message: Genetic understanding of TAA has advanced immensely in the two decades since the landmark initial mapping of the human genome.Aortic surgeons need to be familiar with the genetic landscape of TAA.Perspective Statement: Currently, 70 specific genetic variants have been associated with TAA, with varying degrees of scientific certainty. Each gene produces a distinct aortic phenotype and risk profile. This paper provides basic genetic background information for the practicing aortic surgeon, as well as a chart displaying current recommendations regarding the aortic diameter at which surgery is currently recommended.
