Abstract

Future wireless networks (FWNs) will require embedding artificial intelligence into beyond 5G communication systems for (i) smarter use of network-generated data; (ii) automated enabling of network operators; and (iii) service providers to adapt to changes in traffic patterns, security risks and user behaviour. These provisions can pave the way towards safe and reliable next-generation wireless ecosystems. The paper first reviews existing and emerging aspects of FWNs considering aspects for enhanced multi-antenna and data forwarding techniques; use of artificial intelligence for novel adaptive digital beamforming techniques for realistic antenna arrays; communications in the millimetre-wave bands; blockchain-based approach to spectrum management and sharing; and use of machine learning for enhanced quality of experience to sustain profitable operation of beyond 5G ecosystems. The focus of the paper is then steered towards exploring localization scenarios for FWNs and determining which key parameters will play an integral part when designing an indoor localized FWNs.
