Abstract

Toluene, which is one of the typical volatile organic compounds (VOCs), can pose a serious threat to environment and human health. Catalytic oxidation technology is regarded as a highly efficient method for the removal of toluene. This article reviews the recent advances of the catalytic oxidation of toluene on Mn-based catalysts. The reaction mechanism of the catalytic oxidation of toluene has been summarized first. Then the structure and catalytic performance of different Mn-based catalysts have been systematically described and discussed. In particular, defect engineering to fabricate highly active Mn-based catalysts has been introduced. Finally, the current scientific issues and perspectives for the catalytic oxidation of toluene in future research are put forward. Hopefully, this comprehensive review can shed light on the design of more efficient Mn-based catalysts for toluene oxidation to promote their practical application.
