On Some Difficulties of Continuous Quantity [1896]
Bertrand Russell, Nicholas Griffin, Albert C. Lewis
Abstract
The problems of mathematical continuity, with which this paper is concerned, were brought to the forefront of Russell’s mind by his reading of Hannequin 1895 and Cantor 1883a in March 1896. “On Some Difficulties of Continuous Quantity” is his first surviving extended attempt to deal with these problems, and may be seen as an elaboration of his remarks in Papers 2 (Notes 11, v) and 4. The essay can also be seen as a preliminary to Paper 7 which was published the next year.
