This is Research by Design

Abstract
This chapter discusses recent trends in research by design in the field of architecture and, as such, it attempts to introduce the present challenges and weaknesses of the method. It concludes with some thoughts on the importance of designing as a vehicle to develop understanding and knowledge, as well as of how to keep an open and liberal attitude toward the form and content of design research while simultaneously maintaining high academic standards. It is proposed as that kind of research in which the process of designing, as well as experience gained from practice, plays a crucial role in research not only as inputs to be observed, but, more importantly, as the actual methods and outcomes of the research itself. Research endeavors have become crucial for all schools of architecture. In order to increase clarity in current communications on the subject, this chapter has introduced a scheme with which to structure our discussions of research activities. .
