Abstract
We examine the terminology applied to the electron-transfer reaction mechanisms of annihilation and coreactant electrochemiluminescence (ECL) systems and introduce an alternative approach based on the reaction that ultimately generates the excited state of the luminophore. The terminology is derived from photochemistry and electrochemistry terms, enabling more consistent, intuitive labeling of excitation, catalytic, and quenching routes.
