Abstract

Power electronics devices have gained popularity in recent years due to their sophisticated and easy control with high power handling capabilities over other devices. In power system the power quality issues are major concerns, Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) are designed to protect sensitive loads against the power quality problems such as Voltage Sags and Interruptions. ATS uses two power sources, that is the main source and a secondary source. When a disturbance occurs in the main source, it automatically transfers the load to an alternate source. This article focuses on the design and fabrication of three-phase Automatic Transfer Switch, having fast switching characteristics with lesser possible time. It switches the load to an alternate source within minimum transfer time of 1 to 2 milliseconds. The results presented in this research work validates a transfer time of 1 to 2 milliseconds which has been improved compared to commercially available ATS with switching time of 4 to 6 milliseconds.
