Abstract

Metamaterials constructed from the tessellation of units have extraordinary physical properties and material functions. Most mechanical metamaterials are based on the large structural deformation of units, while the transmission and synchronization of these motion deformations among units are poor which leads to difficulty in designing and controlling the properties. In this study, a modular mechanism based on the kinematics of Sarrus linkage is constructed, and this mechanism is tessellated to a metamaterial with constant negative Poisson’s ratios and a clearly defined deformation path. By varying the specific parameters of the modular mechanism, Poisson’s ratios of the metamaterial can be programmed and almost constant. Hence, a novel approach to constructing metamaterials based on the kinematics of linkages is proposed in this work.
