Review of field-assisted ultraprecision machining difficult-to-machine materials

Abstract

<p indent="0mm">Field-assisted ultraprecision machining is an advanced manufacturing technology innovated from the traditional ultraprecision machining technologies by combining laser, ultrasonic vibration, and magnetism, among others. It achieves a nano- or subnanometer machining accuracy when manufacturing difficult-to-machine materials. This paper reviews the development of field-assisted techniques in ultraprecision machining, including turning, grinding, and milling. Considering the surface quality, machining efficiency, forces, tool wear, and other experimental results, field-assisted ultraprecision machining has obvious advantages compared to traditional ultraprecision machining. This review summarizes the present shortcomings and prospective challenges in field-assisted ultraprecision machining, which is beneficial to the development of the advanced hybrid multienergy field-assisted machining technology.
