Abstract

This chapter explores an approach to human resources management that begins with an organization's vision translated into a strategic plan and then operationalized through its budget and human resource policies to achieve the institutional mission, goals, and objectives. Policies developed in response to external accreditation or regulatory requirements are typically led by human resources administration with the support of academic health science centers (AHSCs) leadership, including legal counsel. Developing both an institutional culture and specific human resources policies aimed at responding to generational differences, including differences in attitudes toward such issues as work-life balance, telecommuting, and flexible scheduling, will be essential if AHSCs are to succeed in attracting and retaining talented and diverse faculty and staff. Numerous other trends in academic medicine - and in health care more broadly - are likely to demand organizational responses that include the development and implementation of appropriate human resource policies and management tools.
