Abstract
Industry 4.0 inovlves an array of technologies such as the internet of things, smart sensors, autonomous robots, big data, cloud computing, machine learning, artificial intelligence and many more. High speed communication networks form the backbone of all connected industry 4.0 technologies and operations. This paper discusses some of the most important communication protocols followed in industry 4.0 automation systems. These protocols range from RS232, RS485, MODBUS, PROFIBUS, CANBUS, CC-Link to Ethernet/IP, PROFINET, EtherCAT, MODBUS TCP, MODBUS RTU, Ethernet POWER-LINK, CC-Link IE and Sercos III. The paper also discusses some of the IoT application layer protocols such the REST, MQTT, CoAP, XMPP, DDS, WebSocket and AMQP. Features of wireless communication technologies such as the LoRaNet and LoRWAN are also briefly described.
