Foveated imaging by polarization multiplexing for compact near‐eye displays

Abstract

Abstract We demonstrate a multi‐resolution foveated imaging system for virtual reality, which is enabled by a single display panel with polarization multiplexing to significantly increase the angular resolution without scarifying the frame rate. By using a polarization‐dependent cholesteric liquid crystal reflector, we have achieved a 4.4× higher resolution density while maintaining a compact form factor.
