Abstract

A low-profile in-vehicle 2×2 MIMO-5G antenna system that covers the multiple frequency bands is proposed in this paper. The uniqueness of this research is the full 5G NR (New Radio) frequency band coverage with a compact geometry size, and the antenna is fabricated using low-cost printed circuit boards (PCB). This antenna system is suitable for mounting inside the shark-fin enclosure on the roof of a vehicle, and it's composed of a 5G main antenna and two-part 5G diversity antenna, with a low-profile size of 0.1λ × 0.07λ × 0.14λ, which can cover two wide bands including 617-960 MHz and 1710-6000 MHz. Additionally, we couple it by adding metal patches to achieve coverage in the high-frequency band. This antenna covers 617-960 MHz (VSWR < 2), 1710-5000 MHz (VSWR < 2), and 5000-6000 MHz (VSWR < 3). The isolation between the antenna elements is greater than 6 dB in low-frequency bands and greater than 10 dB in high-frequency bands. Simulated results are in good agreement with the tested results, ensuring practical application.
