• The relative competitive advantage of Solidago canadensis was higher than Erigeron annuus. • The combined effect of co-invasion of S. canadensis and E. annuus was antagonistic. • This study presents a method for calculating the relative competitive advantage index. • This study presents a method for calculating the co-invasion combined effect index.
