Abstract
In this letter, we take the lead in investigating the average AoI performance for polar coded status updates over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. Compared with the non-automatic repeat request (non-ARQ) scheme, the hybrid ARQ with chase combining (HARQ-CC) scheme can effectively reduce the average AoI, especially in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region. Then, to improve the AoI performance further, two methods are proposed to optimize the design SNR and the puncturing length which are both essential code construction parameters for polar codes. Simulation results indicate that appreciable improvement is obtained via the methods proposed.
