Amorphous-SiO2 nanoparticles for water treatment materials

Abstract

This work presents a study of synthesis and characterization, as well as the application of adsorption from amorphous SiO2. The synthesis method used is a continuous method (hydrothermal-coprecipitation), from natural silica sand. The results of XRD and FTIR characterization prove that the synthesized SiO2 powder has an amorphous phase structure; and morphological analysis results showed a particle size of about 80 nm, spherical morphology, and BET data proved to be of mesopore, with a shaft volume of about 1,200 cm3/g and a shaft diameter of 100-200 angstrom. Has high porosity, and is inert as a ceramic material, it is very safe to be applied as a filter material, in the process of water consumption water treatment. A good form of porosity (mesoporous), amorphous SiO2 is able to absorb water-soluble dyes, methylene-blue.
