Modulus of elasticity for sand determined by SPT and CPT
H. Denver
Abstract
This chapter deals with the determination of the modulus of elasticity for sand based on standard penetration tests (SPT) and cone penetration tests (CPT). The moduli of elasticity for the sand profiles are determined by pressuremeter tests and screw-plate tests and are then compared with the results from the SPT tests and CPT tests. Three different test sites, where the soil profile mainly consists of fine sand to a depth of 15 metres, have been selected in order to perform a laboratory and an in-situ testing programme on the sand. Dutch cone penetration tests are performed by means of the Dutch mantle cone penetrometer tip following the Recommended Standard for the Cone Penetration Test. Laboratory tests have been performed to determine this depth and precautions are made to be able to screw the plate down to a depth where the influence of the unloading caused by the bored hole is negligible.
