Avoiding Catastrophe

Abstract
ver the last decade, we have witnessed a true paradigm shift in ATTR amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM)-with the development of effective therapies occurring concomitantly with a major advance in the ability to make a diagnosis noninvasively. Such testing takes advantage of the fortuitous discovery that multiple nuclear bone tracers ( 99m technetium pyrophosphate in the United States) are taken up by the myocardium in patients with ATTR-CM, with little to no uptake in other forms of cardiomyopathy. This simple-to-perform, relatively inexpensive scan has directly contributed to a surge in ATTR-CM diagnoses.
