Abstract

Xylene (C 8 H 10 ) is an aromatic volatile organic compound (VOC) with high toxicity and carcinogenic nature. Resistance sensors are good choice for reliable detection of xylene. In this study, we have reviewed different strategies for detection of this gas. Pristine, doped, decorated and composite metal oxides gas sensors are widely used in this area and we have fully explained them. Catalytic activity of noble metals such as Au, Pt and Pd as well as some metal oxides such as NiO and Co 3 O 4 are highly beneficial for dehydrogenation of xylene, which is explained in this review. With more focus on the sensing mechanism of gas sensors towards xylene detection, this review provides a good reference for design and optimization of resistance gas sensors for reliable detection of xylene.
