Abstract
Insight gained from a simple method to rapidly calculate a lower bound for the critical gradient at which ion-temperature-gradient modes are destabilized in stellarators yields a new configuration, based on the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, with an increased critical gradient as well as reduced turbulent heat fluxes.
