The effect of recycled aggregate on properties of concrete: A review

Abstract
This paper explains the effect of recycled concrete aggregate on the properties of concrete. The review study showed these results: the compressive strength of the concrete with recycled aggregate is lower than that with natural aggregate. The splitting tensile strength and modulus of elasticity decreased with an increase in the replacement ratio of recycled aggregate. This is attributed to cement mortar on the surface of the recycled coarse aggregate. The increase in the percentage ratio of recycled aggregate led to an increase in deflection. This is due to the recycled material having a modulus of elasticity that is less than natural aggregate, which leads to a decrease in the rigidity of the beam and an increase in the deflection. No significant reduction in the ultimate load is observed when the ratio of recycled aggregate increases. From the results, it can be concluded that the recycled aggregate is suitable for use in structural applications.
