Abstract

Strong electromagnetic shielding coatings for aviation components are becoming more and more important as aerospace technology develops. To understand better the microstructural evolution, surface morphology and thermal behaviour of zirconium diboride (ZrB 2 ), aluminium oxide (Al 2 O 3 )/zirconium diboride, silver (Ag)–zirconium diboride composites, copper (Cu)/aluminium (Al)-doped films, titanium dioxide (TiO 2 )/silicon (Si)/Ag(Cr)/TiN x films and zinc oxide (ZnO)/silver/zinc oxide structures, this work presents the creation and use of advanced coatings. Applying X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and microstructural characterisation, among other experimental investigations, the performance of the coatings is assessed in a virtual aircraft environment. This work contributes to better knowledge of the elements impacting electromagnetic shielding durability and efficiency, which opens the door to the development of next-generation coatings that would meet and even surpass the strict specifications needed for aerospace applications. The enhancement of this technology highlights the importance of maintaining the dependability and safety of aircraft systems, which eventually helps both the crew and passengers.
