Classification of Energy Saving Techniques for IoT-based Heterogeneous Wireless Nodes

Abstract
The past few years have witnessed a rapid growth of IoT-based wireless systems in different sectors. The IoT heterogeneous devices, which typically, are battery-constrained, have to run, in most of the applications, for longer periods of time in order to fulfill their assigned tasks, according to the end-user requirements. Moreover, the large-scale deployment leads to a higher energy demand due to the increased communication volume, and thereby, the lifetime of IoT devices is reduced. Thus, realizing energy-efficiency in such devices becomes a key challenge in order to minimize energy consumption and extend the systems' lifetime. However, it is imperative to classify energy-saving techniques to optimum utilization. In this paper, we explore various energy-efficient techniques proposed recently for green IoT-based wireless systems. More specifically, IoT-based heterogenous WSN, which is at the heart of IoT technology. We first review current classification works of various approaches exist in literature for traditional WSNs or IoT-based networks, highlighting their main focuses and some key parameters. Then, we propose a new common taxonomy that bring-all-together and covers the major energy-conservation techniques introduced in the reviewed categorization papers or proposed recently for IoT-based WSN. Finally, we briefly present each of the categories, according to the introduced classification view and identify their sub-divisions.
