Abstract
Measurement of moisture is of paramount importance for optimising energy consumption as well as increasing product quality and shelf life in process industries. Details of a comprehensive design for building a microwave-based moisture sensor along with calibration methodology and field demonstration of this concept is presented. Calibration, which is an essential step before field deployment, has been demonstrated using a waveguide method. The methodology presented connects the calibration performed using the waveguide method to that of free space methods employed in the field. Results for two field tests in De-oiled cake (Soya) and Animal feed (cattle feed) processing plants are analysed. The deficiencies and capabilities of the method to perform density-independent measurements have been demonstrated in these real-world scenarios.
