Abstract

Abstract Background Nanometal-organic frameworks (nano-MOFs), which exhibit distinctive features, such as controlled release mechanisms, stimuli-responsive behaviors, and sustained drug release profiles, have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation drug delivery systems. Area covered This review outlines the impact of nano-MOFs in biomedical applications, emphasizing their potential for targeted drug delivery through active strategies and their biocompatibility considerations. Expert opinion The versatility and tunability of nano-MOFs pave the way for personalized medicine, allowing tailored formulations to meet individual patient needs. Despite their transformative potential, challenges remain in terms of stability, toxicity assessment, and standardization. As nano-MOFs progress from laboratory research to clinical trials, they present a paradigm shift in drug delivery, offering precision medicine solutions through theranostic platforms. The future holds promise for the use of nano-MOFs to revolutionize drug delivery, ushering in an era of personalized and effective therapeutic interventions.
