Abstract

Preserving the integrity and safety of food items is a pressing concern for human society and directly affects their lives. On the other hand, appropriate packaging technology can ensure and improve the quality of food products for consumers. In addition, artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed the food field by improving various procedures, increasing food safety, quality, and creativity. Therefore, the addition of AI technology to food packaging represents a transformative move in the food industry. This new technology uses AI algorithms to evolve the packaging industry along the entire logistics chain, including improving product management, maintaining food safety, optimizing production process tasks, improving quality, advanced traceability, combating food fraud, improving recycling, reducing environmental impact and promoting biodegradables, predicting shelf-life, providing personalized nutritional recommendations, and creating competition among packaging manufacturers. As a result, AI increases innovation, sustainability, productivity, and efficiency, reduces packaging costs, provides new packaging equipped with sensors and capable of accurately analyzing a wide range of data, and enables real-time monitoring and decision-making. Moreover, improves supply chain management and increases consumer satisfaction. This comprehensive review first introduces the most common types of packaging in the food industry, then discusses the central role of AI in organizing further development and progress within the food packaging field, while also introducing the barriers to its extensive implementation and the complexities of its implementation.
