AI in education
Ivana Bartoletti
Abstract
If we believe that AI can bring positive innovation to education, learning, and teaching then we must look at the risks and consequences too. Not doing so will be harmful to the social and technological progress our society desperately needs right now. With this in mind, this chapter focuses on the intrinsic role of education as the main leveller for improving equal opportunity and social mobility. Regardless of our background, it is through schooling that we can achieve access to knowledge, work, and financial security, with all that that entails. Therefore, the introduction of AI in education policy and practice needs to be seen through the lenses of the role of education in our society, thus ascertaining whether the AI can act as a springboard for opportunity, to further or hinder the role of education. The chapter focuses on several potential risks, including the erosion of human agency and the perpetuation of existing social divides, with a view to informing a cautious yet optimistic approach to the deployment of AI in education.
