Abstract
Design of a millimeter-wave (mmWave) phased array antenna based on the Butler-matrix beamforming technique for fifth generation (5G) wireless applications is discussed in this paper. An 8-way compact Butler-matrix produces eight beam states. The phased array is printed on Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) substrate material. The designed antenna has eight radiating elements and fed to 8×8 Butler-matrix to obtain the beam scanning ranging from -30 to +30 degrees. The peak gain of 22 dBi over the operating frequency band from 59.5 GHz to 60.5 GHz was obtained. Both antenna and beamforming network is designed in a single 35×35 mm2 chip suitable for 5G applications.
