Abstract

Abstract Edible insects have garnered increasing attention as a sustainable and nutritious food source to address global food security challenges. This systematic review explores the nutritional benefits, environmental impact, economic feasibility, consumer perceptions, and regulatory aspects of edible insects. The study comprehensively analyzes various insect species, highlighting their rich protein content, essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals, making them viable alternatives to conventional animal-based proteins. Furthermore, insect farming is more resource-efficient, requiring less land, water, and feed, while also generating fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional livestock. Despite these benefits, economic and scalability challenges, consumer acceptance, and regulatory hurdles remain significant barriers to widespread adoption. The review employs a structured methodology, examining a range of peer-reviewed studies published in the last decade to provide an integrated understanding of edible insect farming’s potential and limitations. The findings suggest that while edible insects offer considerable promise, further research is needed to optimize farming practices, improve public perception, and develop standardized regulations for safe insect consumption. In conclusion, edible insects represent a sustainable solution to global food security and environmental challenges, but overcoming existing barriers will require interdisciplinary efforts, policy support, and technological advancements.
