Abstract

In the last decade, the technology-driven paradigm of Industry 4.0 has emerged as a game-changer also for the food industry. RFID can enable multiple new devices and processes accordingly, especially regarding logistics, sensing, and eco-sustainability. After the introduction of current trends of RFID for food processing and distribution, this contribution describes an ongoing project for fruit ripening monitoring as a case study for RFID-based sensing of food. The detailed system can monitor avocados at both consumer and stock levels and can estimate the ripening status with an accuracy higher than 85%.
