The Status and Future of Mining Automation: An Overview

Abstract

This article presents a review of the current status of automation in the mining industry using mainly Australian examples and outlines a possible future trajectory for the technology. Automation in various guises has been around for centuries. It was in the industrial sector in the 20th century, however, when automation was vigorously adopted. With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the mining industry is adapting and adopting many of the technologies and processes that have been developed by the industrial sector. The adoption of automation has been greatly facilitated by the collaboration between academia and industry.
