Abstract

Fluorescence materials have received much attention in scientific studies because of their potential uses in cell imaging, photonic devices, and sensors. Sensors based on the combination of fluorescence techniques with various luminescent nanomaterials have recently been developed for the selective and sensitive sensing of biochemical molecules with these nanoparticles. This review provides a summary of the most recent applications of fluorescence-based analytical techniques. Downshifting and upconversion procedures are discussed to briefly introduce the principles underlying the luminescence of a material. Following that, the most recent findings (2019–2022) on the applications of fluorescence techniques for analytical assays are presented, along with a classification of “turn-off” and “turn-on” approaches. In addition, we discussed how to differentiate the fluorescence quenching/enhancement mechanisms using unique spectroscopy techniques.
