Abstract

This paper has proposed a PSO based optimization approach to optimize the sizing and position of distributed generation (DG). This research article discusses about the DG units, which are considered for placement is capable to inject active as well as reactive power. The basic objective of optimum installation and estimation of capacity of DG units is to reduce system loss of active power, enhance bus voltage. It is already known that, the distribution network has more power loss due to its higher KX ratio. Henceforth, it is clear that, when DG is placed in a location other than optimal location, it leads to more system losses and voltage instability. Therefore, it is most important to optimize the position and size of DG unit in the network of distribution to achieve the designed objectives. The highlighted technique is utilized on 85-bus network. Programs for load flow of radial distribution system are prepared in MATLAB environment. The Forward and Backward Sweep (FBS) based method is applied to implement the PSO based optimization technique. PSO based optimization is known as a very popular optimization technique among all AI based techniques as it require very less computational time but at the same time, this technique provides very accurate results. Therefore, the proposed research work motivates to apply this technique for optimal capacity and siting of DG in distribution network.
